O’Donnell, who co-hosted the network’s morning show with Gayle King, convinced then-CBS News president Susan Zirinsky to give Glor her job and move the ratings-challenged broadcast from New York to Washington, D.C. , the sources said.
The decision turned out to be a costly one for CBS. Not only did the network spend thousands to move the show, but it also didn’t change the ratings of the third-place program.
During O’Donnell’s five years at the helm, ratings have fallen roughly 25%, pushing the newscast behind rivals ABC and NBC.
The CBS News anchor announced this summer that O’Donnell would vacate the anchor chair after the presidential election in November.
The network will also move the show back to New York in a cost-saving measure and revamp it under CBS News anchor John Dickerson and WCBS anchor Maurice DuBois.
The changes come as CBS Paramount is in the throes of laying off 2,000 employees in order to cut $500 million from its budget ahead of its planned merger with Skydance Media, which is expected to be finalized next year.
On Tuesday, Paramount approved the second phase of layoffs, which began in August.
The company said 90% of the layoffs would be completed and that the final 10% would come at a later date.
Sources told The Post that the cuts are likely to be completed by the end of 2024, according to CBS News Washington. The DC office is likely to take a hit after the election.
