Anchor of CNN Jake Tapper called the water body where the returned astronauts spread below the US bay in a short knot for the Trump administration – before adding that the rest of the world still recognizes it as the Gulf of Mexico.
The “Lead” host started his program at 5am on Tuesday, providing a minute-minute return covering on the space of the space capsule that held NASA Astronauts Nick Hague, Sunni Williams and Butch Wilmore, along with Roscosmos Cosmonaut Aleksandr Gorbunov.
“The 17-hour home trip started around 1am [ET] This morning. Within the hour, they are expected to sprinkle near Tallahassee in an area that the US government now calls America Bay, known elsewhere as the Gulf of Mexico, “Tapper told viewers.
“We are following closely every step of this journey and will bring you re-entering and spraying live.”
A few minutes later, Tapper made another reference to the Gulf of America during an exchange with Scott Altman, a former NASA -stronaut who gave the network analysis.
When Altman made an observation about the G-Force pushing down into the capsule held by astronauts as it enters the atmosphere, Tapper said: “And you are going to the bay of America, what they call the whole world of Mexico, do they have an idea of where you are going to Gulf?”
Immediately after taking office for the second time on January 20, President Trump signed an executive order by renaming Mexico’s bay “Gulf of America” - an action that has aroused controversy.
While federal agencies such as the US Board for geographical names have begun implementing the change, private entities such as media and map services remain separate.
Google and Apple updated their maps for US users referring to the body of water as the “Gulf of America” but kept the original name elsewhere.
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has officially protested the decision, arguing that the US cannot unilaterally rename an international water body.
Associated Press still calls the Gulf of Mexico with his original name, which he has performed for 400 years, while accepting the name Gulf of America.
The refusal of the wire service to fall on the line made Trump’s White House limit the entry of its reporters to the Oval office and the one, resulting in a lawsuit to be brought by AP.
Tapper’s comments are evident given that CNN under new leadership has sought to achieve a more balanced approach to the Trump administration coverage compared to the first first between 2017 and 2020.
A CNN spokesman refused to comment.
Shortly before the inauguration, CNN Mark Thompson’s chief addressed a group of over 100 journalists and prominent figures in the air, including Tapper and Anderson Cooper, advising them to refrain from “prejudice” Trump.
He also warned them “against the expression of any of their anger” during inauguration.
Days after Trump took office, long-term antagonist Jim Acosta, the former White House correspondent, announced he was leaving CNN after the network told him his time Slot would be moved from the late mornings at midnight.
Some observers interpreted the move as the CNN way to seek to return a new page with Trump, which often wrapped his heads with acosta during the news announcements he collected in his first term as president.
The network, which reaps the fruits of a bonanza of evaluations by directing Trump’s opposition during his first mandate in office, has then seen his gaze fall quickly – causing a radical adjustment of his programming under Thompson.
The Trump administration has been in Loggerheads with the main press since it turned into energy in January.
Main news organizations, including the New York Times, NBC News and NPR, have been denied access to the Pentagon jobs.
Moreover, the administration has ordered federal agencies to cancel reconciliation in publications such as Politico and Reuters.
Earlier this month, the administration also took steps to close the government -run media such as Voice of America.
