Meta Mark Zuckerberg is reportedly begging with the Trump administration to intervene on behalf of the social media giant after facing a mass fine according to the strict rules of the European Union antitrust.
The European Commission, EU competition supervisor, is preparing to quench meta for what is expected to be hundreds of millions of dollars and potentially more than $ 1 billion, as the post reported.
Meta will also receive a vacation notice and the desire that details which practices should change to take in accordance.
In an attempt to deduct the sentences – or to avoid them all – Meta leaders have pushed US officials under Trump to resist European Union efforts, reported Wall Street Journal, citing sources known to the issue.
“This is not just about the fines – it is about the commission that seeks to hand over successful American businesses simply because they are American, while allowing Chinese and European rivals to leave the blow,” one spokesman said in a statement when he reaches commentary on the report.
The White House and the European Commission’s representatives did not immediately repay the request of the post for comment.
The fine against Meta was expected to be announced by the end of this week – although the Euractive news site reported that EU competition chief Theresa Ribera, who is currently in the US, was delaying the announcement until she returned.
Zuckerberg had personally made the issue of US response to European regulations at meeting with US officials in February.
The Facebook founder has been leaving Trump, even visiting him at Mar-a-Lago and appointing an important Trump ally, UFC President Dana White, on the Board of Meta Directors.
Although traditionally fierce in the Big Tech, Trump has been a loud critic of the EU custom to impose a massive fine on American companies. The president has referred fines as “extortion overseas” and threatened revenge measures as part of his ongoing trade dispute with the EU.
Digital Market Act (DMA) came into force in 2023 and implements difficult competition rules in meta and six other companies considered to be Internet deleters – Apple, Google Alphabet, Amazon, Booking.com, Tiktok Parent BYTYTEDance and Microsoft.
Apple is also expected to be fined along with Google as part of the first wave of DMA sentences against large American technology giants.
Numerous outputs have reported that EU officials were set to implement “modest fine” intended to promote compliance with the law without attracting Trump’s full anger.
According to the diary, some EU officials have been concerned about the announcement of fines before Trump reveals his plans for mutual tariffs against Europe. The Trump administration has billed its announcement on Wednesday as “ERITION Liberation Day”.
The European Commission has aimed at Meta for allegedly obliging customers in a “Payment or Consent” restrictive model for advertising on Instagram and Facebook.
Officials say customers should have the ability to access free services without granting permission for personalized advertising.
Initial charges against Meta were revealed last year.
In a public compliance report published last month, Meta said “has continued to receive additional requirements that go beyond what is written in law” despite attempts to adhere to DMA rules.
Joel Kaplan, a well-connected Republican who serves as a senior Meta policy official, said last month that the company “will not be turned on” from the Trump’s help in response to EU strike.
“When companies are treated differently and in a way that is discriminatory against them, then this should be emphasized for the government’s home government,” Kaplan said, according to Bloomberg.
Separately, Zuckerberg himself made the opportunity that Trump should go to the American technology companies facing EU fines during a January appearance in Podcast “The Joe Rogan Experience”.
Last year, Apple became the first company to be accused of violating DMA for allegedly preventing rival app developers to easily guide customers in services outside its application store.
The expected EU fine would punish Apple for that issue.
