Apple users are upset about the latest software update, claiming that their device’s performance has taken a drastic hit.
Overzealous customers eager to upgrade to the new iOS 18 – released on Monday ahead of the iPhone 16 launch – are facing battery problems, claiming the operating system drains their smartphones’ battery life.
Already on X, users have complained that they “regret the update” as the update is allegedly “killing” their phone’s battery, joking about their devices overheating after installation.
“I updated my software to IOS 18 and my battery percentage dropped so fast,” wrote one X user, per the Daily Mail. “It’s been an hour since I charged it to 80% and I haven’t used it [sic] it’s so much at this time but my phone percentage is now at 67%.
While a select few claimed the update had no effect on their battery, that’s standard fare for any iPhone update — with iOS 17, disgruntled Apple fans complained of the same battery life issues — and, in the good side, completely normal.
“Installing a new OS on an iPhone causes a lot of things to go on in the background, from indexing to battery recalibration, and this can go on for hours or even days,” ZDNet researcher Adrian Kingsley told the Daily Mail. -Hughes.
“Not only does this consume power, but recalibrating the battery can give the impression that the battery is draining faster, when in fact it is not.”
According to ZDNet, concerned smartphone users can try restarting their devices and updating apps temporarily in an attempt to resolve the issue. The site also recommends lowering the screen brightness, resetting network settings, using Dark Mode, or turning off Wi-Fi Assist, a feature that automatically switches to cellular data when Wi-Fi is too slow.
Poor battery life can indicate a degrading battery condition — which can be easily checked in the iPhone’s Settings app under the Battery tab — and a battery replacement can fix the problem.
Ultimately, the issue should resolve itself over time once the update is complete. Sometimes, users have to wait until another software update is available to fix bugs.
The long-awaited iOS 18 update allows users more customization capabilities, abandoning the grid layout of the home screen and allowing users to place apps wherever they want and even change the color and size of icons.
Additionally, the Photos app underwent a revamp, with an updated layout with new collection options. The Mail app features new ways to organize inboxes, and a new feature in Safari lets users get rid of unwanted ads and pop-ups for a more streamlined browsing experience.
The operating system also has a new Passwords app and updated privacy features, as well as new Apple Intelligence features that use AI.
While not all iPhones are compatible with iOS 18, according to Apple, all devices from the iPhone XR and later should be able to install and use the latest operating system.
