A herd of elephants in the Meatpacking District, a new Mexican restaurant on the LES, and more NYC events

Each week, Alexa is rounding up the buzziest fashion awards, hotel openings, restaurant debuts and popular cultural events in NYC.

It’s our curated guide to the best things to see, buy, taste and experience around town.

What’s making our luxury list this week? Elephants arrive in Meat Packing, Adam Driver is back on Broadway and new live paintings by Kenny Scharf.

100 life-size sculptures of Indian elephants will be installed around the Meatpacking District next week, following their debut in Newport, Rhode Island. These elegant pachyderms were made by the Coexistence Collective, a community of 200 indigenous artisans living within the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve in southern India, and the exhibit is in partnership with an NGO called Elephant Family USA. The sales of these sculptures benefit conservation NGOs from around the world that support the coexistence of wildlife and humans; prices range from $8,000 for a baby to $22,000 for a litter. The elephants will stay at Meat Packing until October 20, when they will migrate to Miami, followed by the Blackfeet Nation, Buffalo Pastures in Browning, Montana and Los Angeles. Kenny Scharf’s colorful art has been delighting audiences for decades – with over a dozen new pieces debuting at Totah next week. Courtesy of Totah

Kenny Scharf says that “a very important and guiding principle for my work is to reach beyond the elite boundaries of fine art and connect with popular culture through my art.” To that end, over a dozen new works by the artist, who appeared at the Mudd Club in the 1980s and is often quoted alongside Keith Haring and Jean-Michel Basquiat, will debut next week at Totah. There are more than a dozen colorful new works that will no doubt please his existing wide fan base and engage many more. September 4 through November 9 at DavidTotah.com

This marks the fair’s foray across the Atlantic into New York City and includes an interesting twist: a fashion section curated by none other than editor and designer Gabriella Karefa-Johnson. The collection runs from September 5-8 at Water Street Projects. More information at Collectible.Design

After a sip at Lower East Side bar Only Love Strangers, head upstairs to Comida Corrida for a hearty meal of Mexican dishes. Guang Xu

A few months ago we informed you about the existence of a super new bar cocktail called Only Love Strangers. Now we are here to tell you that they added the Mexican restaurant in the space above. It’s called Comida Corrida and it’s run by chef Alberto Gomez, who hails from Acapulco de Juárez. Its menu celebrates the culinary heritage and flavors of Oaxaca, and is reasonably priced (starting at $24 per person). Offerings may include soups, rice, beans, a tangy slaw sauce, handmade tortillas and homemade hot sauces, all served alongside a choice of mains such as Barbacoa (+ $4, braised lamb in plantain leaves and dry chili), boiled chicken (+$4), or the fresh catch of the day (+$8) served with a refreshing cucumber salad.
