NY Times’ Maureen Dowd Compares Democratic ‘Coup’ Against Biden to Plot Against Julius Caesar: ‘Et tu, Nancy?’

New York Times columnist Maureen Dowd slammed top Democrats for pushing President Joe Biden to drop out of the 2024 presidential race in what she called a “coup” — and likened the machinations to the assassination of Julius Caesar .

In her Saturday column called “Dems Are Satisfied. But a coup is still a coup,” Dowd wrote ahead of Monday’s Democratic National Convention in Chicago, where lawmakers will make official their nomination for Vice President Kamala Harris.

Dowd singled out former President Barack Obama, Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.), Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries as part of the powerful group that played a major role in Biden’s decision to leave.

She claimed that prominent Democrats showed “grand flattery” to Biden after “stabbing” him, and claimed that First Lady Jill Biden and scandal-scarred son Hunter Biden “were not fooled or appeased by” any of them.

Dowd also thought Pelosi was wary of participating in the “bloodbath” but had no choice with polls showing Biden would be crushed by former President Trump in November.

“As much as she cared about the president, Pelosi would never choose to help Biden’s House over helping her beloved House of Representatives. The estrangement of their love was clear in interviews she gave to promote her new book, “The Art of Power,” Dowd wrote.

“One of the most ruthless and successful tactics in the history of Congress seemed shy of stabbing its friend and conflicted about whether to take credit. And you, Nancy? Biden must have thought,” concluded Dowd.

Dowd wrote that a group of powerful Democrats maneuvered behind the scenes to push Biden out of the race. AP

The reporter wrote that in July, as the media reported that senior Democrats were asking Biden to drop out of the race, a plot was unfolding to convince the president to abandon his re-election bid — which he did on July 21.

“At some point, when the polls fell, the Democratic mandarins decided to put the well-being of the party — and the country — ahead of the president’s ego and stop feeding his self-righteous fantasy that he was the only one who could beat The Donald. Trump,” wrote Dowd.

Dowd skewered Democrats for experiencing “euphoria” and “ecstasy” ahead of the Democratic National Convention.

“It will be a glorious coronation – except everyone is mad at each other,” she wrote. “Mainstream Democrats are seething with discontent even as they prepare to try to put together a united front at the United Center in the Windy City. A group of powerful Democrats maneuvered behind the scenes to remove an incumbent from the race.

“It wasn’t exactly ‘Julius Caesar’ in Rehoboth Beach,” Dowd added. “But it was a tectonic shift and, of course, there would be serious repercussions.”

She added: “While it was the right thing to do, because Joe Biden wouldn’t be able to campaign, much less serve as president for another four years, in a completely vital way, it was a impressive coup. “
